Do you love to travel? Get the urge every few months to go out and explore? Then the planning begins, right? Planning a trip just ramps up the anticipation of what you are going to see. You look at photos on the Internet and guidebooks galore as you countdown the clock for your next trip? So close to leaving but yet so far!

Do you love taking pictures on your trips and always end up with thousands of photos to sort through? A lot of artists take their trip memories a step further and create amazing travel journals. Your journal can be full of anything you want. You can have pages of the food you eat, the buildings you see, the people walking by… Those thousands of photos can be helpful references if you want to create a travel journal later or refine a sketch into a larger illustration.

The On-the-Go Sketching Digital Collection is a great resource kit for any artist who wants to illustrate their travels and the scenes around them. In it, Marc Taro Holmes teaches four sketching video workshops plus Artist’s Sketchbook, a book on ideas and inspirations for starting a creative travel journal or lookbook.

Each of Marc’s videos feature a different sketching subject, from birds and panoramic landscapes to people and how to capture them all in a travel journal.

See Two of Marc’s Approaches

Marc follows a three-pass method when sketching, going from pencil to pen to brush, which you can start to get a sense of in this short video tip from Artist’s Network TV.

Marc also teaches us methods for creating a park scene full of moving, busy people, starting with what he calls the head shape (and the hair shape!). The most intriguing part? Compiling several figures into one…!

5 Tips for Journaling and Sketching

What will you sketch in your travel journal?

The holidays are just a few months away and it’s the perfect time to illustrate those special moments with friends and family. Sketch pages full of fall colors and the tasty treats from Thanksgiving. Christmas is full of lights, color and wonderful moments of celebration.

Create a page showing the gifts you received this year or a page full of the ugly Christmas sweaters you and your friends wear to a party. We always love seeing artists do pages full of themed objects and with holidays and their decorations, that can be incredibly easy to do.

Comment below with what you want to illustrate in your travel journal! If you’ve posted any pages online make sure to link us to them so we can see your amazing art.
